Key factors in the selection process are the interview and
the references of candidates.
It is usually more effective if the same person conducts
both the interview and the references in order to connect the information.
In all cases listening is critical. After you ask the questions wait
for the answer. Be patient. Do not attempt to rescue the person if they are
having difficulty answering it. In some cases you can reword the question if
you feel that they do not understand it. Wait!!!! You will be surprised at the
outcome.
The Interview
1.
The interviewer should not sit behind a desk with a chair in front
for an interview.
2. Eliminate
as many barriers as possible for easy discourse between the parties.
3. The
interview should stick to the objective and last no longer than an hour.
4. Good
notes should be taken for later review and to compare to the references.
5. Crisp
questions should be asked with expectation of crisp answers.
6. Candidates
are usually impressed with a professional interview.
7. A
candidate should be dismissed professionally at an appropriate point if the
interviewer is not convinced of the candidate's viability.
8. At
the end of the interview advise the candidate that you will contact them.
The References
1. References
are sometimes regarded more important than the interview.
2. Following
the guide, each person should be asked the same questions for comparison.
3. If
a reference is hesitant to answer the questions, ask them if they would simply
ask to the best of their ability.
4. Listening
carefully is critical. What or how something is being said can formulate many
answers to the questions.
5. Again,
take good notes to compare with each other and with the interview.
